If you are a construction site manager, chances are good that you are going to need to figure out a viable way to transfer your heavy equipment from site to site without wasting a ton of gas or having it take days. One easy way to do it is to load the less fuel efficient, slower equipment on a trailer that is attached to a faster moving truck. However, you want to be absolutely sure that you don't accidentally damage your equipment while transporting it by having it fall off the trailer or move around too much. Here are some tips for transporting heavy equipment on a trailer so that it doesn't get damaged.
1. Choose a Trailer With a High Enough Capacity
Your first step is to choose a trailer with a high enough capacity to handle your heavy equipment. All trailers are going to have a weight limit that they can easily handle, and it is up to you to make sure that you know the weight of your equipment to ensure that you don't go over the limit. Once you are able to compare the weight of the equipment to the capacity of the trailer, you need to make one more measurement. You need the weight of the trailer itself. The reason for this is that it is a good rule of thumb to make sure that your trailer is able to handle the weight of your equipment, plus its own weight, in its stated capacity. This will allow you to ensure that your ride is as smooth as possible and that your equipment is not inadvertently damaged.
2. Use Edge Protection With Your Tie Downs
Government regulation requires that you make sure that the tie downs that you are using to secure the heavy equipment are not next to any sharp edges unprotected. This means that if your tie downs have portions of their bodies directly on top of a hard surface that could cause the tie down to erode over time, edge protection is required. Thoroughly inspect your tie downs and add edge protection where needed before moving the trailer.
3. Mark Your Tie Downs
Finally, make sure that each of the tie downs that you use is accurately marked with the weight that it is able to hold back. This will allow you to make sure that you are using the correct tie downs with the equipment that needs them.
